Riyadh, Rana Azeem – The first edition of the Tar Festival officially opened this evening at the Abu Bakr Salem Stage in Boulevard City, Riyadh. Organized by the Music Commission, the festival runs from August 20 to 23, offering audiences an immersive celebration of Saudi Arabia’s musical heritage, with a special focus on the tar — a traditional percussion instrument central to the Kingdom’s cultural soundscape.
Coinciding with the global Esports World Cup, the Tar Festival adds a vibrant cultural layer to Riyadh’s event calendar, creating a unique blend of tradition and modern entertainment for local and international visitors alike.

In addition to the concerts, the festival features a dedicated marketplace inspired by the historic Souq Al-Hilla, where visitors can explore and purchase traditional musical instruments. Live workshops are also held throughout the event, where skilled artisans demonstrate the intricate craft of making the tar and other heritage instruments — offering attendees a rare, hands-on cultural experience.
