ITHRA and the Visual Arts Commission Present a Landmark Exhibition Documenting the Evolution of Saudi Arabia’s Modern Art Movement
Dhahran, Saudi Arabia –
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (ITHRA), an Aramco initiative, is hosting the “Beginnings: The Emergence of the Saudi Art Movement” exhibition in collaboration with the Saudi Visual Arts Commission from July 13 to November 7, 2026. The exhibition offers visitors a unique cultural experience that documents a pivotal era in Saudi Arabia’s artistic history, highlighting the emergence and evolution of the Kingdom’s modern art movement from the 1960s through the 1980s.
Organized as part of ongoing national efforts to preserve and celebrate Saudi Arabia’s artistic heritage, the exhibition presents a comprehensive documentary narrative showcasing how Saudi artists engaged with their cultural identity while responding to the Kingdom’s social and economic transformation. It features more than 150 artworks created by 68 Saudi artists, alongside over 200 archival materials and immersive multimedia displays that trace the development of artistic practices and recognize the pioneering artists who laid the foundation for Saudi Arabia’s contemporary art scene.

Complementing the exhibition is a comprehensive cultural program featuring panel discussions, workshops, and specialized training sessions led by artists, researchers, and experts in Saudi art history. These activities aim to enrich the visitor experience and deepen public understanding of the formative stages that shaped the Kingdom’s artistic landscape.
The exhibition is divided into several thematic sections. The first explores the origins of Saudi Arabia’s art movement through the interaction between individual artistic initiatives and institutional support, while the second examines the artistic and intellectual trends that influenced Saudi creative production during this transformative period.
This edition builds upon the exhibition previously presented at the National Museum in Riyadh from January 27 to April 11, 2026, reflecting the successful collaboration between the Visual Arts Commission and ITHRA to make this valuable research and cultural content accessible to a wider audience.
By hosting this exhibition, ITHRA reinforces its commitment to promoting culture, preserving the history of Saudi art, and fostering dialogue between artists, audiences, and cultural institutions. The initiative contributes to strengthening appreciation for the Kingdom’s artistic heritage while creating an interactive platform that draws inspiration from the past to envision the future of Saudi arts.
